Dye me a Zebra

Necessity is the mother of invention.

The Gazans have proven to be resilient people- living through war, devastation, hunger, and with the upcoming winter-- a lot of cold, and very little cooking gas. Yet little has stopped the Gaza Zoo owner from continuing his business. After the Israeli Military Offensive, "Cast Lead" in January 2009- most of his animals died of hunger. He is now well renowned, with daily visits from journalists who come to see the man-made creating that has spread across the globe.
Tragedy or comedy? When you see them, you're not sure if you want to cry or simply praise the human mind for persevering. Above you can see- Gaza's Zebras. After a closer look, or maybe not0 you may realize that Gaza's zebras are actually donkeys who have been carefully crafted into an African species with regular old human hair dye!

The zookeeper is proud of his ingenious decision to make a monochrome donkey into a duo tone wonder. The zebras were carefully scotch-taped, while his brother prepared the hair dye that came through the tunnels from Egypt- and voila, 25 L'oreal minutes later- you have a Zebra.

Other animals in the Gaza zoo include a lion who is taunted with rabbits and eats 25 kg of chicken daily, peacocks, fish, a camel and even an ostrich. The camel above was being fed Fanta....and the Lion below was at petting distance....
All were animals that were brought through the tunnels from Egypt. My personal favorite were the three dogs. Dogs in Muslim culture are often considered unclean and the Sunnis for example say that Prophet Muhammad didn't like dogs. A few weeks ago I was in Jerusalem and taking a very large Great Dane for a walk, and the reactions were priceless, since most Muslims steer clear from dogs, and often learn to fear them. I had children screaming, men coming out of restaurants to take pictures, and curious inquiries from across the street at a safe distance!
Another animal behind bars were these little mangy kittens.
I even got a ride on a camel- and the horseman in charge was happy to show his tricks.
